Understanding the Concepts Professor Ingrain P. Nelson Fin 100 Introduction to Finance December 1, 2012 1. Imagine you are a small business owner. Determine the financial ratios that are important to the business. Compare your ratios with those that are important to a manager of a larger corporation. As a business owner, financial understanding is something that has to be studied before you decide that you are going to open or even start a new business. Small businesses in general run the finance operations of their business in a different way than the larger corporations.Most of the small businesses must rely on the personal investors or personal resources to access money needed to be a successful business. It does not matter if it is a small business or a corporation; being a successful business depends on having the capability to make more than what is being paid out. Now that we have a little understanding of what it will take to start the business; we must have knowledge of the different types of ratios that will help us with this. The main three ratios that are used in the business world are the current ratio, total debt ratio, and profit margin.The current Asia is a measure of the company ability to pay off its short-term debt as it comes due (Melcher & Norton). This ratio is computed by dividing the current assets by the current liabilities. Total debt ratio is Just what you think it is; the total amount of debt the company has. The total debt ratios are total debt or total liabilities of the business and divide it by the total assets. Profit margin is simply how much profits (money) is made during the operation or while the business was open if you had to close it down.Net income is divided by sales in order to show the profit. All of the three ratios are used to no matter how big or small your company seems to be. 2. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of debt financing and why an organization would choose to issue stocks rather than bonds to gen erate funds. If you run into the problem of the current ratio showing that you have the inability to cover the costs of the business then, debt financing may be the best solution for this problem. As we know with all financial options, there are some advantages and disadvantages of any company or business.The first advantage for debt financing is that it allows the menders or the owners of the company to maintain control and ownership of the company. A second advantage would be that the interest paid on the loan may be tax deductible depending on the type of loan. The best part is the lenders you borrow money from do not share in your profits. The main disadvantage is the risk of credit ratings getting ruined or filing for bankruptcy (Palaver, n. D. ) As an organization; they can choose to either issue stocks or bonds to help generate funds for the company. Most of the time they prefer to issue stocks over bonds.Stocks are a form of winnowers; they represent participation in a compa ny's growth (Investigated). A between investors and institutions that, in return for financing, will pay a premium for borrowing, known as a coupon (Investigated). When it comes to the obligation of repay the principle on the stocks you have none; now for the bond you must pay it on the date of maturity. The inertest of the bond has dividends, but the company only pays the dividends when the company makes a profit. The stocks have a fixed interest rate that has to be paid at a specific time. 3. Discuss how financial returns are related to risk.We know that how the returns work is the greater the risk the greater the returns. The more you invest the more you will get back in returns. The relationship between financial risk and return is the gain or the lost from investments or securities. Just because you have chosen to take a higher risk does not mean that your return will be as high as the risk you took. There are five factors of model investment risk shows risks in terms of credit risk, term risk, market risk, size risk, and price risk. The return on an investment can be measured by a real rate which is what is earned after inflation has been figured into the value.The market, size, and price factors are the link between risk and return (Risk and return are related – Wealth Foundations, n. D. ). Now the beta stock is one factor that will help to determine the risk. 4. Describe the concept of beta and how it is used. A stocks beta is the measure of an asset's systematic risk and the relative risk (Melcher and Norton). Beta also measures the volatility or variability of an asset's returns relative to the market portfolio (Melcher and Norton). The assets of the company are more volatile than the market. If the company has a greater systematic sis than the market then the betas are greater than 1. . Even though the total risk and the sum of systematic risks are all measured by beta, they are equal and they are all measured in different units. Total risk i s measured in percentages and beta is unit less. The rules of how the beta works can be very easy to understand. The beta value will always be greater than 1 if a stocks price moves more than the stock market. If the value of the beta is less than 1, the stock market is moving more than the stocks price. Increased volatility of stock price equals higher risk for the investors ND a higher expected return, therefore betas over 1 are riskier.Betas under 1 are the exact opposite. These stocks have fewer risks, less volatility, and smaller overall returns. (Stock Beta and Volatility, n. D. ) 5. Contrast systematic and unsystematic risk. As mentioned in the above paragraphs, ownership of stock does not come without risks. The types of risks are categorized as systematic and unsystematic risks. The risks are very similar to each other; in that they are both affected by news and represent changes in a stocks return. The combination of these two risk types is noninsured the total risk. At th is point is where the similarities between the two risks end.Systematic risks, also known as non-diversified risks, are common risks that affect all stock. This risk is the portion of an asset that can be linked to market factors that influence all firms (Marina, 2010). The market for the systematic risk is the news, such as hurricanes, war, or an increase in interest rates, that links with the investments of the company. When things like this happen the investors do not have control; and now this presents a higher risk for the stockholders. Now that the hysteretic risks cannot be mitigated through diversification, they require a risk reward for buying a risky stock.The risky premium is determined solely by the systematic risks of a security. In addition to the risk premium, stockholders expect high returns because of the high risks posed by systematic risks. (Weakened, Kismet, ; Skies, 2011) Unsystematic risks or diversified risks are independent risks that only affect a single com pany or industry. The risk indicates a portion of an asset that is related to random causes that are linked to firm-specific events (Marina, 2010). The types of unsystematic events are to be made by the company or the industry specific news.When a merger happens between two companies this is what falls into the unsystematic risk category. Also other industry factors and events such as labor unions, strikes, lawsuits, and marketing strategies are a unsystematic risk. The changes that happen resulting from the independent risks are unrelated across investments. If the company has one unsystematic event that may happen, this will not have an effect on the entire outcome of the portfolio. Since the risk was so low this meaner that the stock will not be able to receive a risk premium. They can, however, diversify their portfolio to eliminate unsystematic risks.The elimination of the risks lowers the return an investor can expect (Weakened, Kismet, ; Skies, 2011). 6. Imagine your manufact uring corporation has Just won a patent lawsuit. After attorney and other fees, your corporation will have about $1 million. Explain how you plan to invest the money in order to diversify the risk and receive a good return. Support your decisions with concepts learned in this course. If my manufacturing corporation has Just won a patent lawsuit, I would have to take advantage the financial concepts that I have learned in this class such as financial management, stock and bonds, and the financial risk.I would use these concepts in order to diversify the risk and receive a good return. I am not for sure as to how much was awarded before the attorney and other fees but, only about $1 million will remain. This money will be invested into different portfolios that would help to diversify the risks that I will be taken not that I have money to do that with. Taking about half of the money to invest in multiple companies that have the potential to row and I can see where it would grow. I wo uld buy shares; this will give me the long term investments.

The Bush Doctrine

President George W. Bush made known to the people all over the world the existence of his new National Security Strategy on September 2002. While the new scheme preserved a few components from past strategies, in many aspects it is a daring digression from previous U. S. policy. It clearly asserts that the United States is in an extremely distinctive spot of political and military ascendancy and that it possesses an ethical responsibility to utilize this power to institute an autonomous and noninterventionist world order.This new strategy maintains that the United States must set up and sustain a global military supremacy to achieve the kind of democratic and peaceful world it has visualized. As it is, terrorists and some states that are known to seek or actually possess weapons of mass destruction pose a colossal challenge to world stability.Fearing that the Cold War principles of deterrence and containment may be outdated or would no longer work, and that â€Å"if we wait for threats to fully materialize, we will have waited too long,† Bush declared in the National Security Strategy a novel â€Å"preemption doctrine† to combat such threats (Speed & May, 2005, pp. 38-49). The Bush Doctrine This doctrine is a set of foreign policy courses of action initially disclosed by President Bush during his commencement speech addressed to the graduating class of West Point on June 1, 2002.When taken as a whole, these principles shaped a comprehensive and novel stage in US policy that stressed military pre-emption, military superiority (what has been known as strength beyond challenge) unilateral action and a dedication towards extending democracy, liberty and security to all regions. Such set of principles was made official in a document called The National Security Strategy of the United States of America, published on September 20, 2002.This doctrine provided the framework for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The term Bush Doctrine at first referred to the policy formulation stated immediately after the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center assault that the United States would see no difference between terrorists who commit outrageous acts against property and humanity and those people who believe and protect these terrorists. During the invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, this policy was stridently applied.Even though the Taliban-controlled government of Afghanistan volunteered to extradite al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden if concrete proofs were given that he was really responsible for the September 11 attacks and also offered to entrust bin Laden to Pakistan where he would be tried under Islamic law, their refusal to extradite him to the U. S. with no preconditions was considered justification for invasion. This principle then connotes that any country that would not ta ke a pro-active position against terrorism would automatically be seen as a country supporting it.In a televised speech to a session in Congress, President Bush recapitulated the doctrine with these very popular words – â€Å"Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. † Roots of the Doctrine History of the doctrine can be traced back to the Department of Defense when a draft version of the internal Defense Planning Guide principles prepared by Paul Wolfowitz came out, at that time then he was the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in 1992.As the guidelines were leaked to the press and consequently triggered bitter controversy, President Bush commanded it to be re-drafted which now became to be known as the Bush Doctrine. Debate over the Bush Doctrine In spite of the United States’ position as a world power, the ominous September 11 assault on the American people on American soil and Bushà ¢â‚¬â„¢s declaration of a GWOT depicted more than ever the necessity of taking a new perspective of its global security environment (Zelikow, 2003, p. 19).The Bush Doctrine progressed from a realist selective engagement scheme toward a plan of US supremacy with the motivation and enthusiasm to utilize pre-emptive military might in confronting threats essential to American national security (Dueck, 2004, pp. 523-532). Both liberal and conservative standpoints clashed. The Bush Doctrine instigated an ocean of censure, praises and its own set of disputes, deliberating on its legitimacy and strength as the appropriate strategy for America in the twenty first century.President Bush’s administration chose to take a position toward a NSS of Primacy, utilize preemptive military action to take care of national vital interests, and use a â€Å"coalition of the willing† when UN support was less than expected (Bush, 2002). It simply means that the doctrine’s antagonists view it as egotistical, over-belligerent and menacingly intimidating (Kagan, 2004, 65-72). â€Å"By the time the war actually began in March 2003, the Iraq crisis was no longer just the result of transatlantic differences, but a significant cause of them† (Gordon & Shapiro, 2004).â⠂¬Å"Critics point out that the practice of preemption is not new, however turning it into doctrine weakens international norms and encourages other countries to engage in risky actions. Similarly, they argue, American primacy is a fact, but there is no need for rhetoric that rubs other peoples’ faces in it† (Ney, 2004, p. 9). Criticisms Those who have been very cynical of the Bush Doctrine articulate that it is not a principle of pre-emptive war but preventive war. A pre-emptive war is one against an enemy preparing to strike right away. A preventive war is one against an enemy that will pose a danger in the future.Likewise, they consider it a huge problem if American preventive wars might motivate other countries to validate attacks on their enemies as â€Å"preemptive wars. † Apparently, the National Security Strategy warns other nations not to â€Å"use pre-emption as a pretext for aggression† and explains that the â€Å"reasons for [American] actions will be clear, the force measured, and the cause just. † However, critics argue that with this policy, it will be difficult for America to be successful in stopping other countries from using pre-emption to wage war.Another argument from detractors further insist that the doctrine implies that America will do what it chooses without respect and consideration for international organization agreements. This principle, according to them, emasculates the authority of the initiatives of these international groups to confront many global predicaments like slavery, drug-running and terrorism, concerns that are also important to the United States. In like manner, these opponents of the doctrine are fearsome that a willingness to use preemptive military force may turn this â€Å"last resort† scheme into a â€Å"first resort† instrument.By going it alone in the world, American power loses its authority and authenticity and the United States is seen as a tough tormentor and persecutor. Finally, say it isn’t realistic. These critics stressed the fact that it took democracy hundreds of years to set in, develop and become established in Western countries. Societies like Iraq, which have no democratic tradition, cannot be expected to right away form liberal institutions. It is also thought that the costs of nation-building will be outrageously overwhelming.And on the personal level, these opponents of the doctrine think that it is definitely shameful for the US to impose her way of life, most especially the capitalistic system, on other cultures. When is a First Strike Acceptable? For the sake of argument, one accepts to be true that some right of pre-emptive self-defense exist under international law, the next query is how far it can go. Experts on the subject claimed that even if there was a right of striking first, it could only exist when the country affected had no time to take the issue to the United Nations.Based on Article 51, it has been a rgued that â€Å"you have the right of self-defense until such time as the Security Council takes action. And therefore it’s implied that if you have the time to deliberate and to go to the Council before you take pre-emptive action, then you have to go to the Council. † In short, the Bush doctrine was and is obviously illegal. If one considers it closely, there was never an indication or suggestion that Iraq is going to launch an assault at the United States or that any of the countries that potentially fall within the scope of military action validated by the Bush doctrine are immediate threats.Clearly, the policy was aimed at â€Å"effectively closing down dangerous regimes before they become imminent threats† an act which represented a usurpation of the Security Council’s role in global affairs. In the specific case of the United States and Iraq, however, experts did not consider Iraqi actions to pose a grave threat to the United States to justify a p re-emptive attack. As an indication of what might indicate a sufficient threat, there should be evidence that the Iraqi leadership is in possession of some sort of weapon, plus a means to get it to the United States, plus actually intending imminently to do that but otherwise not.The Dangers of Unilateralism It has been asserted that it was intrinsically undesirable for the United States or any other country to take pre-emptive action unilaterally. The difficulty posited by anticipatory self-defense as that of finding a reasonable middle ground between the reductio ad absurdum of two extremes have been depicted, â€Å"If you insisted that a small country wait for a neighbor to attack it with nuclear weapons before responding†¦ everybody would just say the law is an ass.On the other hand, if you have a law which says that any country that feels threatened is free to attack any country from which it feels the threat is emanating, then you don’t have a law at all. † In the case of the United States and Iraq, it has been sketched out what a reasonable interpretation of the law would demand — that the US show other states (starting with the Security Council and NATO) evidence to suggest that Iraq is supporting the use of force by terrorist organizations against a member (or several members) of the United Nations.Without such evidence, â€Å"you probably shouldn’t do it, because everybody is going to assume that you’re acting for other motives. † That would destabilize the international system, because other countries would see the Bush doctrine as a potential threat to themselves. Extending this point to a general principle, analysts say that when there is a rule in international law that had to be interpreted reasonably, as with the right of self-defense, the process by which it was interpreted became more important than the substance of the rule itself.It could not simply be interpreted by a single country, with no a ttempt to persuade other countries of the necessity of its actions. If the process [of interpreting the rule] is an entirely unilateral one, in which the strong do as they will, and the weak have to accept it, then the world is back to the Peloponnesian wars, and certainly most countries would resist that. International Law and the Bush DoctrineAt home and abroad, the doctrine triggered so much alarm because it evidently ignores even the minor respect to international law and collaboration that exemplified Post-Second World War foreign policy until the Clinton administration. From now on, the U. S. might make use of the cover provided by UN resolutions and international coalitions for the sake of expediency, but Bush and his team were openly declaring that the world’s only superpower would do as it wanted without being bound in any serious way by the international community.Between September 11 and the public declaration of the Bush Doctrine, there were many manifestations of the administration’s sweeping condescension for international law. These foreigners are declared by the Bush administration to be â€Å"unlawful combatants† and not â€Å"prisoners of war† whose rights are suppose to be protected under the Geneva Conventions but as it is, these detainees have been prohibited from seeing family members or having access to lawyers. The list of incidents where the Bush administration has written off or repudiated support to various agreements with other powers is huge and far-reaching.One good way to recapitulate the approach the Bush administration is taking and its current line of thinking is to say that the U. S. is now organized, equipped and geared up to hold everyone in the world answerable under international law–except itself. Nowhere has this stance been more prominent than in the administration’s policy towards the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC has been a major subject of international discussion and negotiation for years and was scheduled to come into existence on July 1, 2002.It will be made up of judges and a prosecutor chosen by the 66 nations that have ratified the 1998 Rome Statute of the ICC and will claim to have jurisdiction over the most heinous abuses resulting from international conflicts (Keach, 2003). Right or Wrong Strategy? Evidently, the Bush Doctrine is an exceedingly audacious plan. However, it is hideously inconsistent and faulty. Some of the flaws are: †¢ International support almost zero. These guidelines will b e confronted with a high degree of opposition from the global community which implies that it will also be the end of open cooperation to stop terrorists and all forms of terrorism.It cannot be denied that global unity and collaboration is a great necessity in order to effectively hunt terrorist leaders and bring them to justice. With the kind of opposition the US is getting and the type of psychological and emotional level the global community is in, that ability to obtain cooperation is in danger. †¢ There is too much to loose economically. Or a poetical way of saying it is – the war may have been won but along the way, peace is lost. Obviously, economics was behind the the West’s great triumph during the Cold War.The US’s consecutive principles of containment permitted wealth and success in the face of peril. It is common knowledge that the US’s high technology and affluence facilitated her to obtain increasing levels of superiority over the USSR. With the Bush Doctrine, the threat of ‘hot’ wars with small nations of insignificant power over a long period of time has and will persist to gravely damage the United States and global economies. Economic catastrophe can and will create problems in states the US formerly had no reason to be afraid of.†¢ US military cannot fight and win clean victories against these opponents. As the Russians found out in Grozny, urban warfare is not even remotely similar to the clean open air victory we fought in the first gulf war. Further, the other foes we may fight are much more difficult, particularly N. Korea. The collateral damage in that situation would likely be massive. Conclusion The Bush administration's language of preemptive strikes, regime change, and anticipatory self-defense, simply present euphemisms for raw military aggression and belligerence.Critics claimed the new â€Å"strike first, ask questions later policy,† and hostile unilateralism are hazardous legitimating of preemptive strikes. Israel, Pakistan, Russia, China, and smaller powers had already made use of the so-called Bush doctrine and â€Å"war against terrorism† to legitimize assaults on domestic and external enemies and there were big possibilities that it could escalate into bigger conflicts that will definitely make the world an extremely volatile and vicious place to live in.â€Å"A global strategy based on the new Bush doctrine of preemption means the end of the system of international institutions, laws and norms that we have worked to build for more than half a century. What is at stake is nothing less than a fundamental shift in America's place in the world. Rather than continuing to serve as first among equals in the postwar international system, the United States would act as a law unto itself, creating new rules of international engagement without the consent of other nations. In my judgment, this new stance would ill serve the long-term interests of the United States† (Galston, 2002).In the book Rogue Nation: American Unilateralism and the Future of Good Intentions, Clyde Prestowitz (2003) asserts that Bush’s doctrine of preemptive strikes and military supremacy emasculates three primary towers of strength as far as international order and stability are concerned – 1) the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia which recognized and established a principle of respect for national SV and noninterference in the affairs of other countries; 2) the UN Charter that disallows the threat or use of military force except in self-defense or under the authority of a UN Security Council mandates; and the 3) Nuremberg Trails which considered preemptive strikes a war crime. In addition, this doctrine of preemptive strikes could give free rein to a sequence of terrible wars that could thrust this planet into a dreadful and nightmarish militarism and totalitarianism vividly depicted in George Orwell’s 1984. The Bush principle is an extremely barbaric policy, bringing the international community to a social Darwinist battleground where years and years of international law and military discretion were set aside in possibly the most perilous foreign policy doctrine that had ever surfaced in American history.It foretells a militarist future and a period of eternal war in which a new militarism could create a succession of interminable bloodshed and reprisals, such as the case in the Palestine-Israel conflict (Vidal & Gore, 2002 / 2003). In 1986, BectonDickinson had acquired exclusive rights to a patent for a new syringe invented byCharles B. Mothball that had a moveable protective sleeve around it. The plastictube around the syringe could slide  down to rarely cover the needle. 992, a nurse, Maryann Rockwood, used a Becton Dickinson 5 cc syringeand needle to drew blood from a patient know to be infected with AIDS. Ms. Rockwood Worked in a clinic that served AIDS patients, and she drew blood from their patients several times a day. After drawing the blood on this particular day,she transferred the AIDS contaminated blood to a retile test tube called a restrainertube by sticking the needle through the rubber stopper of the lest tube, which shewas bolding with her other hand. She accidentally pricked her finger with thecontaminated needle. She is now HIV positive.For removing this problem, on December 23. 1996, the U. S patent officeissued patent number 4,631,05y to Charles B Mitchell for a syringe with a tubesurrounding the body of the syringe that  could be pulled down to cover and  protectthe needle on the syringe. As Mitchell noted in  his patent application, those devicesall suffered from serious drawbacks. One of them would not lock the protectivecover over the exposed needle, one was extremely complex, another much longerthan a standard syringe and  difficult to use, and a fourth was designed primarily foruse on animals.So, it can be said that Becton Dickinson has not an obligation to provide thesafety syringe in all its sizes. The company decided to market only a 3 cc versionof the protective sleeve. For 5 years, B ecton Dickinson manufactured only 3 ccsafety syringes. Utilitarianism, rights, Justice and caring: The principle of Latinityrequires that wherever we have a choice between a  native actions or social policies,we must choose the one that has the best overall consequence for everyoneconcerned. Denton Dickinson had at least four other patents for needle-shieldingdevices.There included ICC, 3 cc, 5cc, and to cc syringe. However, the companydecided to market only a 3 cc version of the protective sleeve. The a cc syringes account for about help of all syringe used, although the larger size 5 cc and 10 ccstringer-are preferred by nurse when  drawing blood. Should manufacturers be held liable for failing to market all the products for which they hold exclusive patents when someone’s injury would have been avoided if they had marketed those products? Explain your answer. Yes, they should be. It is their legal and moral obligation to do so.

Principles of Management in McDonalds McDonalds is the largest and most well known global foodservice retailer, which was founded in 1955 by Ray Kroc; head quarter in Oak Brook, Illinois, US. McDonalds has more than 32.000 restaurants (19% operated by the Company and 81% of restaurants operated by franchised restaurants) in 117 countries, serving more than 60 millions people each day (McDonalds, 2009). Recently, many of Vietnamese people still think that fast food services are small business that are not worth to do business. After studying McDonalds, my point of views about fast food industry have been changed considerably. Serving fast foods only, McDonalds receives annually almost 23 billions USD, that is equal about 27% of GDP or 71% total revenues of all types of services of Vietnam on 2009 (Vietnam General Statistic Office, 2009) and McDonalds ranks 153 biggest companies in the world (Forber, 2010). This study aims to analyze management of the Company in the past few years and strategy in the next decade, which help us to understand the reasons that lead McDonalds to the success. 1. Core business 1.1. The main products and services The products of McDonalds are fast foods of wide range of choices, such as: hamburgers, chicken, french fries, soft drinks, coffee, milkshakes, salads, deserts and breakfast with varies of famous in the world brands (Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Filet-O-Fish, Chicken McNuggets, Chicken Selects, Snack Wraps, McFlurry, McCafe) which meet requirement of customers of different ages. McDonalds fast foods have became necessary daily foods for the numbers of people not only in the US but in other countries also. Therefore, McDonalds brand name became so popular, that many investors in the world willing to deal with McDonalds to open restaurant under franchised agreement 1.2. Business generates the most revenue McDonalds revenues mainly come from its own restaurants and from restaurants operated by franchisees. In accordance with the McDonalds Corporation Annual Report 2007, 2008, 2009, revenues of the Company in 2007, 2008 and 2009 are 22.8 billions USD, 23.5 billions USD and 22.75 billions USD respectively. Most of Companys revenues come from the restaurants operated by the Company, which has percentage in 2007, 2008 and 2009 are 73%, 70% and 68% respectively; the rest of revenue are from franchised restaurants. Obviously, the percentage of revenue of Companys operated restaurants has been decreased while percentage of revenue of franchised restaurants increased (McDonalds, 2009). In accordance with McDonalds Corporation annual Report 2009, the most profit of the McDonalds has been generated by franchised restaurants, which in 2007, 2008, 2009 holds about 64%, 65%, 66% of the total profit of the Company respectively. The second place of profit has been generated by restaurants operated by the Company (McDonalds, 2009). Franchised margins Franchised margin dollars represent revenues from franchised restaurants less Companys occupancy costs (rent and depreciation) associated with those sites. Franchised margin dollars increased $254 millions of 4% (7% in constant currencies) in 2009 and $695 millions or 14% (11% in constant currencies) in 2008. The franchising strategy contributed to grow in franchised margin dollars in 2009, 2008 and 2007 (McDonalds, 2009). Company-operated margins Company-operated margin represent sales by Company-operated restaurants less the operating costs of these restaurants. Company-operated margin dollars decreased $101 millions or 3% (increased 3% in constant currencies) in 2008. Thus, it buys all its beef, fork and poultry products from suppliers who maintain the highest standards and share McDonalds commitment to animal welfare. Regarding to the education, McDonalds mould the future of the society and therefore, is committed to the education of the youths. Thus, they support school-age employees in their reaching of educational goals. Regarding to the people, McDonalds recognizes the importance of the employees, who is driving force to the Companys success. So, McDonalds is committed to creating an environment that value and respects their employees, recognizes and rewards their performance, as well as providing them with meaningful growth opportunities. From the case McLibel In the middle of 1980s London Greenpeace began a campaign focusing on McDonalds as a high profile organization, symbolizing everything they considered wrong with prevailing corporate mentality. In 1986 London Greenpeace produced a 6-sided fact sheet called Whats wrong With McDonalds? Everything they dont want you to know, which accused McDonalds of exploiting children with advertising, promoting an unhealthy diet, exploiting their staff and being responsible for environmental damage and ill treatment of animals. In 1990, McDonalds served libel writs against the five activists who came up with the Whats wrong With McDonalds leaflet. Three of the five activists took the former suggestion, while Dave and Helen chose the former. On 28th June 1994, the McLibel trial began and the verdict was announced on 19th June 1997 in favour of McDonalds, which stated that Helen and Dave had not proved the allegations against McDonalds on rainforest deforestation, heart disease and cancer, food poison ing, starvation in the Third world and bad working conditions. However, they had proved that McDonalds exploited children with their advertising, falsely advise their food as nutritious, risk the health of their most popular, long term customers, are culpabably responsible for cruelty to animals, are strongly antipathetic to unions and pay their workers low wages. A Look At Macbeth Tragic Hero English Literature Essay In the play Macbeth, the plot focuses around a war hero who becomes greedy for power, which leads to his ultimate coronation as King, and demise. At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare displays Macbeth as a war hero, back from his latest campaign, and given a new title. At first, he is shown as a good person, however, after the influence of witches and his wife; he reluctantly gives into evil. After becoming King, he slowly becomes darker, as he seeks to ensure his position as King. This leads to him to becoming a tyrant ruler of Scotland, and eventually we find the war hero has become a truly evil person, who is then killed as a result of his own actions. By showing that Macbeth is a tragic hero, Shakespeare shows a character that initially starts off as a good and basically heroic person who will go to his downfall through the events of the play. The concept of a tragic hero is that instead of the stereotypical concept of a hero that succeeds in their adventure, the hero is a ch aracter that suffers tragedy and ultimately fails in what he has done. This is often due to a tragic flaw or because of an event that happens. Oedipus is an example of a tragic hero that features as a main protagonist but meets his untimely demise. I shall analyse the character of Macbeth and see if he was always a villain or just a hero who failed in his pursuits, due to how Shakespeare pushes him to that fate. Shakespeares language can be quite complicated in understanding in the first scene, where is introducing the witches: Fair is foul and foul is fair. This means the good is bad and bad is good, an example of an anti-thesis, which gives a darker image to the witches. However, when Macbeth makes a statement later with similar words as an oxymoron: So fair and foul a day I have not seen, it becomes clearer that the meaning refers to the fact the day itself was pleasant but the events of the day were foul. Macbeths use of similar words also ties him to the witches, which adds an eerie feel to the words. The use of witches in this way and what they say immediately links Macbeth to them and their image, as witches were believed to be daughters of the devil, and this casts doubts over Macbeth. In Act 1 Scene 3, Macbeth is seen for the first time. His first sentence incorporating foul and fair already ties this noble man, as he is described in the second scene, with the witches. After walking someway with his friend Banquo, they encounter the three witches who speak of prophecies of Macbeth, about his soon becoming Thane of Cawdor, and then saying All hail Macbeth, King of Scotland, this being the prophecy made about him from the witches. This scene is vital to the plot, as it sets the ball rolling for Macbeths conversion from a hero into a villain. This prophecy is soon re-told to Lady Macbeth, who will be the one who convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan for his throne. This scene also has the effect of making Macbeth seem quite gullible, as he is ready to believe the prophecy of becoming King rather than doubting how unlikely it is that he should ever become King. This shows that Macbeth takes language at face value, rather than exploring the deeper meaning or fully unde rstanding what is being said. We must also remember that witches would supposedly have divination qualities, so it is suggested that this is Macbeths destiny. This may be another reason why Macbeth is quick to accept what they say, as he is attracted to these stories of a good destiny. Banquo is not affected with any desire to believe them, perhaps because it is not his fate. Perhaps Macbeths ambition has been dormant until now, and these fantastic stories are playing on his deep desire to achieve greatness. This may be the first signs of a tragic flaw. The character of Lady Macbeth is interesting, in the way that she seems to be a powerful figure in her relationship with Macbeth, and how she pushes Macbeth to murder the King. Unsex me here. Her unusual lines like these give the impression that Lady Macbeth is not the average wife, and it is also shown that Lady Macbeth is prepared to go against nature just to get what she wants. This is vital to the story, as it is this that pushes Macbeth from hero to villain. However, despite Lady Macbeths first actions in the first few acts that display her as an un-natural person willing to do anything for power, she is slowly eaten away from guilt. This is shown because after King Duncans death she is un-fazed by it, but later suffers hallucinations of cleaning her blood-stained hands, which is imagery used for guilt after murder: Heres the smell of blood still. This is in contrast to Macbeth, who was opposed to killing King Duncan, and was afraid of the guilt of killing him, but after doing s o slowly loses is inhibitions of killing innocent people for power, when he decides to have his friend Banquo killed to secure his position as King, and when he decides to kill the wife and child Macduff out of pure revenge. This singular act is the final event to show people that Macbeth has indeed become an evil person. When Macbeth is convinced by Lady Macbeth to murder Duncan, he is at first very opposed to it. He is reluctant because of the moral implications and how against nature it is: Nature seems dead. This shows that Macbeth is fully aware of the consequences of his forth-coming actions, and he desperately doesnt want to commit the deed. However, he reluctantly proceeds to murder Duncan, after being pushed by his wife. This is an example of an external act causing Macbeth to meet a tragedy, but it is in this way that Shakespeare has used the wife to create Macbeth. After the murder, Macbeth experiences more guilt of the crime, due to the fatherly nature given to him by Duncan: I am his kinsman and his subject. However, this does not prevent him from ordering the murder of his friend Banquo, to secure his position as King. This indicates the degeneration of Macbeths nature as he sheds the qualms of betrayal, but he still experiences guilt which is indicated by the apparition of Banquos ghost to Macbeth only. Surprisingly, this is done without him informing his wife, meaning that he has decision to do this was his own choice and was not pushed to do the deed again. This shows Macbeths growing independence from Lady Macbeth, due to his degenerating morals. However, the consequences soon catch up with him as he sees the ghost of Banquo: Avaunt and quit my sight. The ghost of Banquo is not seen by everyone at the table, so this implies that the ghost may be a figment of Macbeths imagination. However, witches are real in the play, so the ghost could be real. In any case, it appearance and Macbeths reaction show that he still has a moral conflict within him. However, afterwards he says that he cannot try to be morally conscience anymore: I am in blood; steppd in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as to go oer. Macbeth also decides to return to the witches to seek more knowledge: I conjure you by that which you profess, Howeer you come to know it, answer me. This meeting shows that Macbeth has begun to fraternize with evil for knowledge, and so is going against the natural order of things. The theme of going against the natural order of things is present throughout to play, from the use of witches, to killing of the King. To Shakespeares audience it would have been something of a horror play. There are also descriptions of Macbeth going against the natural order; Macbeth hath murder sleep, which destroys the normality and the nature of this world. The audience of the time would certainly find comments like this haunting as they are shown a world that is akin to a nightmare by their standards. As Macbeth seeks to ensure his position as King, he slowly loses his feelings of guilt and for inhibitions. When he decides to have the child and wife of Macduff murdered because Macbeth has fled to England, the audience is now convinced that Macbeth has indeed become a truly evil person, and it is ironic that this action also has the effect of bringing about his downfall, as it makes Macduff strive to kill Macbeth even more. The irony is that another heinous crime for Macbeth finally is his un-doing, as he continues to cross the line, and his nature to continue with these crimes brings about his own punishment: he brings it upon himself. Also, in Macbeths desire to keep hold of his throne, he ensures his losing of it. After this event, Macbeth is shown to have lost every ounce of moral conscience he had in him at the start, as his temper has changed to one of anger and he becomes ruthless. However, he realizes that an end to his reign is near as the Birnam wood has drawn closer to h is castle; I gin to be aweary of the sun, and wish thestate othworld were now undone which is a sign from the apparitions from the witches that his reign would soon end. He decides to die in battle, which is shown through imagery: At least well die with harness on our back. By this time, Macbeth has realized his loneliness, and that he has lost all of his friends and honour and no longer has a reason to live. In his Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow soliloquy he sees life as a story, and because of all the death and pain he has caused, he has become numb to it. This shows Macbeth has regained some moral conscience, but has lost all reason to carry on and now is happy to face his death. In a way, in this final stand, he reflects the story of Oedipus in that he chooses to face the punishment of his wrong-doings and the series of unfortunate events. The audience may relate to the tragedy of this, but also the fact that he shows one last bit of heroism, fulfilling the criteria of a tra gic hero. When understanding how Macbeth is portrayed as a tragic hero, it is important to remember that it is Shakespeare who actually created the character of Macbeth, as the play is only loosely based on historic events. In fact, Shakespeare is using the historical story as a vehicle for the character, basing Macbeth on a historical figure but dressing him with the tragic flaw, wife and ambition to . This means the Shakespeare could create Macbeth how he liked to within some degree, and so Shakespeare had free reign to portray Macbeth as a tragic hero or as just another villain. Shakespeare is also writing the play specifically about Macbeth, so the purpose of the characters is to help describe Macbeth himself, and to expand on his character. Shakespeares basis for Macbeth as a tragic hero could have followed the classical tradition e.g. the story of Oedipus, who is shown as a tragic hero in his own story, and also many other stories of famous tragic heroes. This is also done by showing Mac beth as a normal hero at the start e.g. brave and noble, but is truly shown to be very different from the standard conventions of a hero, and ultimately his being a tragic hero. Shakespeare uses many of the basic traits of a tragic hero, namely the downfall of the hero through mistakes and evil, but shows how what may seem like a hero at first, has dark desires: Let not light see my black and dark desires. One must also be aware that modern interpretations of the play will be different to what an audience in the Globe in Shakespeares time would have thought of it. In modern times, we may not consider the murder of a King as such a sin that goes against the core of social morality, as we may understand that people may have such a desire to be King as to murder the current King, or at least we may understand the lust for such a position more than the people in Shakespeares time, who would have been concerned over the religious implications. Although we may still relate to the audience of the time with the act of actually killing a man to gain what he has, like a low-level thief. However, in their times it would be considered as one of the greatest sins ever committed as the King would have his power because of divine right, and his murder is an affront to God more than anything else. Characters like the witches and ghosts also do not shock us as much as they would have done in Shakespear es time when they were believed to exist and very dangerous. Macbeths ties with these bad things have a much larger effect on Shakespeares audience than a modern audience and would help make the play seem a lot more evil to his original audience. Also, there would have been a difference in view points between the educated, the un-educated and the women of his audience. Un-educated people in the audience would, in general, be more interested in the more violent aspect of the play, as that would have been there general interest at the time. Also, un-educated people would have been intrigued by the witches and ghosts as they were considered to be real and dangerous, and would have added an element of horror to the play. Educated people would have been interested in the main plot of the story, the use of witches and ghosts, and the story behind the play, mainly that the story was based on a real event many years ago, and that the King was a descendent of one of the characters. Women would have related to the actions of Lady Macbeth, who was shown as a powerful figure in the play, yet not powerful by gender socially. Women would also have been touched by the murders of the wife and child of Macduff, and may have rejoiced in the pu nishment of Macbeth, as this horrid act consequentially leads to his demise. Shakespeare uses stagecraft to make sure that the audience knows what is going on in the minds of the characters, as the psychological aspects of the play are important. Shakespeare uses the appearance of Banquos ghost to show the reader the thoughts that are eating away at Macbeths sanity, as no-one else can see the ghost. Also, instances like Lady Macbeth sleepwalking and showing that she cannot help but share the guilt of the crime, or the use of the witches to inject the eerie and dark manner to the play right from the beginning shows how Shakespeare has written a play that has a large psychological effect on the characters and the audience. In this way, he is able to create characters like Macbeth in new ways that can have so much more depth rather than what they physically show. Throughout the play, Shakespeare developed the character of his Macbeth. As Shakespeare has progressed through the play, we have seen Macbeth take a fateful step into evil that leads him very deep. One could say that Lady Macbeth pushed Macbeth over a cliff, and that he fell into a very deep chasm. We see that Macbeth has grabbed a tree on his way down and stays there for a moment, but after losing his will to carry on, lets go and falls to his death. Ultimately, like so many tragic heroes, it is Macbeths hubris to what he should or shouldnt do, and how his hubris develops through the course of the play to turn him into a completely different person. Shakespeare has in many plays like Hamlet and Otherllo displayed tragic heroes, but in Macbeth he has strayed from the typical Hellenistic stories of tragic heroes by creating such depths to Macbeth in his own way that the audience are enraptured against their better nature to a story of a noble man and his demise.

Opposing the Death Penalty Capital punishment is the infliction of the death penalty on a person convicted of a crime. Executing convicted felons has been one of the most widely practiced forms of criminal punishment in the United States. However, this highly controversial form of punishment is not carried out in all of the states in the nation. Currently, the states that do not practice the death penalty are: Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Even for the states that do enforce the death penalty, it has been a topic of debate for many years. In this paper, I will review the major issues related to capital punishment with an emphasis on opposition to it. There are two groups who argue over the decision to take a person's life as a punishment for a crime. There are many points of discussion including whether or not it is a fitting and reasonable punishment, whether or not it acts as a deterrent to crime and whether or not it is morally neutral or morally wrong. These two classes of people can be grouped together as the 'retentionists', and the 'abolitionists' (Americana 596). For the retentionists, the main reasons they are in support of the death penalty are to take revenge and to punish. Their main worry is the protection of society from dangerous criminals. The retentionists have some good ideas, but they are still very wrong. The abolitionists view the death penalty as morally and legally wrong. All My Sons by Arthur Miller

Larry’s letter is instrumental in forcing Keller to realise his fault. Discuss (20M) All My Sons a play by Arthur Miller was staged at the coronet theatre in January 1947 and ran for 328 performances. The play was well constructed and realistic in nature, and it was extremely popular among the audiences. All My Sons started in the middle of things and spends most of the play uncovering the facts of the past so that the audience can see the last act consequences in the present.The play actually deals with the fate of Joe Keller, an uneducated self-made man who has committed an atrocious act during World War II. The play ends with the suicide of the Joe Keller who repents after being exposed with the content of his son Larry’s letter. As mentioned earlier, Joe Keller is an uneducated self-made man who has committed an atrocious act during World War II. Keller has as partner Steve Deever and their factory manufactures cylinder heads for aircrafts. During the war, they rece ive a contract from the army to supply cylinder heads on an urgent basis.However the cylinder heads had hairline cracks in them and Keller is immediately informed by Deever. But Keller asked Deever to get the cylinder heads welded and that he would take full responsibility of the damaged products. Unfortunately those damaged cylinder heads cause twenty-one planes to crash killing their pilots. However at the trial Keller denies responsibility and is exonerated, and the blame shifts to Steve Deever who is imprisoned. Following that Joe Keller lives in total impunity with his family.However when he is confronted with the content of his son Larry’s letter, he is forced to realise his fault. In fact Larry’s letter was intended to his fiancee Ann, in which he reveals that he was shamed by his father’s involvement in fraud and profiteering. Consequently he committed suicide by allowing his plane to crash. However the content of the letter was kept secret by Ann becaus e of her selfish motive to get married to Chris who is Larry’s brother. Moreover she did not want to break the harmony of the home of her would be in laws.But finally the content of the letter is revealed to Kate Keller by Ann because the former is still refusing the union of Ann and Chris. Consequently Ann uses the letter as her trump card to save her future union with Chris and the letter forces Kate to accept to accept Larry’s death and her husband’s crime of killing twenty one pilots. Moreover Chris is also made aware of the content of the letter and is unwilling to forgive his father. Consequently Joe Keller is confronted by Chris and based on the content of Larry’s letter, Joe keller is compelled to reveal the truth of the case to Chris.Joe Keller tries to justify his acts by arguing that he had worked in the interest of his family. But Chris being an idealist condemns the act of his father. Finally Joe Keller realises his fault and understands the disastrous implications of his actions. In order to escape from guilt and repay for his crime, he commits suicide. To conclude, it can be said that the Larry’s letter is indeed of prime importance in making Joe Keller realise his fault, but who unfortunately has a tragic end.

Faustus doesn’t like the boundaries created in many of the subjects he studies for: law, medicine and religion. The black arts come to Faustus and soon studies to become a magician, and summons Mephastophilis, the devil, to ask him to talk to Lucifer to make an offer. Faustus will sell his soul in exchange of 24 years of service by Mephastophilis. Mephastop hilis has explained the dangers of this but Faustus doesn’t care for it and continues the offer.Faustus portrays that he doesn’t care for the circumstances for himself. The commitment he made to the dark arts shows how Faustus cares for knowledge in a way because he wants riches and supremacy of Germany. Faustus images this before the deal he made, and the choice was that he wants it. Doctor Faustus had a great want for knowledge but many hurdles came in the way on how to use that knowledge. Faustus wanted to obtain more, and summoning Mephastophilis open a door for him to explore in ways. Faustus offering his soul to the devil is a choice he made.Faustus had no care for how he would get knowledge, he wanted some type of power greater than god or something unobtainable people can’t obtain. By asking for eternal life, Faustus was making decisions for certain goals. Once decisions are made, Faustus would regret the choice towards the end of his life. Faustus knew what problems would come at him because Mephastophilis acknowledged the problems before Faustus ordered to sell his soul. Faustus had no care in way; he just wanted what he wanted.Faustus didn’t know how to use the knowledge he has in his brain. Faustus knew a great deal of information, he’s a scholar. What Faustus doesn’t know is what is okay and what is not okay. Faustus wanted fun, so he got fun. Using women as toys and playing jokes on the minority and people Faustus thought was under him. Making decisions that didn’t help Faustus in any way until it was too late for him to go back. Doctor Faustus understood the knowledge he was given but he didn’t have the wisdom or the smarts to use the knowledge given to him.The tragedy is that because of the decisions Faustus chose with the knowledge, nothing work for him in the end. The only end Faustus has is Hell with Mephastophilis and Lucifer eternally. In a way, Faustus has obtained eternal life, but he wasn’t expecting the way he wanted. All decisions created by Faustus led to a tragedy, with the great knowledge he obtain, he didn’t know how to use it properly. Faustus looks at knowledge as a great aide in everything but the one who uses that knowledge depends on the person.

about Knorr Soupy Noodles and estimating the reasons for the slow growth rate of Knorr soupy noodles in Goa. The report contains suggestions and recommendations to leverage the brand of Knorr Soupy Noodles in Goa. The Problem Soupy Noodles; launched in 2010 by Hindustan Unilever, under the brand of Knorr, has not managed to significantly bite into the market share of the herit age brand- Maggi Noodles.There is a market situation in Goa wherein there exist very erratic distribution of Knorr soupy noodles and the consumer has not yet received the efficient and sufficient supply of the same. Our research problem explored the awareness, availability of Knorr Soupy noodles and the taste preferences, brand perceptions of the consumers. The Method This qualitative study on Knorr soupy noodles which contains interview, questionnaire and observation has been done to find the brand health of Knorr Soupy Noodles in Goa.The study consisted of 3 phases; two exploratory phases and a conclusive research phase. A field study of various customers via experience interviews and in-depth interviews threw light on the various factors that influence the purchase of the product. Wet sampling was effectively conducted among students of Goa Institute of Management at Sanquelim, Goa. Our area under study was that of Sanquelim, Bicholim and Mapusa which represent similar catchment profiles to areas of Ponda, Valpoi and Quepem in Goa. Our total sample size consisted of 350 people. ConclusionThrough this research, a clear answer came out: Knorr Soupy Noodles is still the second choice to Maggi noodles(but above all the other instant noodles brands) and the various factors that contributed to this in descending order of importance was availability, visibility, price and lastly taste. The demand for the product exceeds the supply and the company needs to relook at its go-tomarket strategy and disrupt the market in terms of distribution and target segment (consider 20-25 age group). Although majority of the consumers would recommend Knorr Soupy noodles, their taste preference was still inclined towards Maggi noodles.The positives that were born from this study was that â€Å"Taste† is not the main reason why consumers are not picking up Knorr Soupy noodles but other factors like availability and price were responsible for this. 5 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodle s Market in Goa INTRODUCTION Objectives of the study The aim of this study is to help Hindustan Unilever to clarify the position of its brand â€Å"Knorr Soupy Noodles† in the instant noodle market of Goa, India and to study the various factors and reasons for the slow growth rate of Knorr Soupy noodles in the market The specific objectives of the study were; i.To study the extent of awareness towards Knorr soupy noodles, ii. To analyze factors influencing the buying behaviour of Instant Food Products/Knorr soupy noodles, iii. To estimate demand potential for Knorr soupy noodles, iv. To study the extent of market penetration of Knorr soupy noodles. Value of the study Firstly, as the objective if the study indicates, it will help Hindustan Unilever to clarify the position of the â€Å"Knorr Soupy noodles† brand in current Goan instant noodle market. Secondly, the study provides current situation of the instant noodle market and customers’ responses to different i nstant noodle brands.This study shall thus paint a clear picture as to where the Knorr soupy noodles brand stands in camparison to its biggest competitor, Maggi Noodles. Thirdly, a third party view on the perceptions of retailers about the product shall decrease bias and provide a better illustration of the demand generation and customer perceptions about the product Finally, useful suggestions and recommendations are offered by doing this study. Scope and Limitations The scope of the project was limited to small area of Goa ie.Mapusa, Bicholim and Sanquelim. The assumption is that the customer profiles of these catchment areas are similar to other areas in Goa like Ponda and Valpoi. 6 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa We did not consider the impact of substitute products in the instant food market like pasta , ready to eat paratha , instant idli m ixes etc while conducting the research. Consumer profiles of management students of GIM were taken and consumption patterns of this group may vary from other teenage/college going population The Wet Sampling was done with only two flavours ie.Chinese chow and Tomato chatpata flavour of Knorr soupy noodles Taste and Flavour can vary with mass production in wet sampling. The entire project was completed within 2 months in a cross sectional manner. The Instant Noodles Market in India Noodles are a commodity which is consumed by everyone, right from kids and teenagers to retirees. Two-and-a-half decades since its launch, ‘2 minute Maggi Noodles’ is the numero-uno brand in the Indian market. Nestle has virtually dominated the Indian noodle market till now but lately many large FMCG players and retail chains have launched their products in this lucrative space.Maggi enjoys a market share of over 70% today, despite the presence of a number of other brands. In the early 80s, th e conservative and typical food consumption era, the concept of ‘ready-to-cook’ food was alien to the Indian market. People were sceptical to experiment with food especially food meant for their children. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, Maggi took the challenge and launched itself in 1983. A decade ago the word †˜noodles’ was synonymous with Nestle’s ‘Maggi’. Indian noodle market (instant noodles) is estimated at INR 1,300 to 1,600 crores (USD 300 – USD 350 mn) in 2010. The market is dominated by instant noodles Nestle’s brand – Maggi The food habitats in India have changed due to the Western influence and the usage of these foods is on the rise.These foods are widely used in catering industries as well as at homes. There are varieties of instant/ready-to-eat foods available in the market to choose from and they have been a part of everyday life, according to the ASSOCHAM survey. Even though after being economical and convenient, 34% of the consumers prefer the traditional types of foods which are fresh and natural without any preservatives or artificial ingredients. There has been a major shift in food habits in the metropolitan cities, as about 86% of households prefer to have instant food (canned, instant mixes, baked, pasta, etc. . Reason s are the steep rise in dual income level and standard of living, convenience, influence of western countries etc. , according to a survey undertaken by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). They have reacted to the situation by launching its Multigrain noodles. It has also launched new flavours like curry and capsicum. They have come also come out with a new campaign to engage the consumer to retain brand loyalty. Through this interactive campaign they are trying to reinforce the emotional connect with its consumers. Factors influencing consumption The majority of the working class also mentioned that instant noodles are a boon to save time, energy and money by using these foods.Various foods helped to prevent the age-old traditional method of long preparation of grinding, cooking or fermenting for hours and hence making the work faster. Even the manufacturers prepared the instant foods according to the taste of the consumers. 92% of the nuclear family feel that they have less free time than before they had kids, it is now a common fact that they are spending less time in the kitchen, and are turning to takeout, delivered food, and semi-prepared meals to help feed the family at mealtime. 2% of bachelors prefer the convenience food because of less cost, time and energy saving, convenience in preparation and consumption in the busy and hectic life. The very term ‘instant† means sim ple, fast ,convenient and affordable food which is easy and fast to prepare besides being hygienic, free from microbial contamination and also convenient to eat, say the bachelors. 67% of working women revealed that the present trend changed the habits to foods which are simple and easy to digest. Hence, the existence of these foods fulfilled all the needs of modern human being. 2% of the respondent said that another advantage of instant foods that occupy less space in the kitchen or pantry, the amount of drudgery involved is less and there is a tremendous potential for commercial exploitation as it is a â€Å"rising industry†. The study tries to include varied relevant categories to ascertain the trend among these clusters.By taking the varied category we have tried to come out with issues (if any) and the opportunities. The detailed study has been carried out on the basis of demographics of gender, age and geographical area. Non-probability sampling has been used in selecting the samples which further is a blend of quota and convenience sampling. To ascertain the awareness of Soupy noodles (phase 1), our team surveyed 180 people from various areas like Sanquelim, Bicholim, and Mapusa. Surveyed people were segmented into 5 categories in terms of age (Below 20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35 and above) and also segmented on gender basis.During our second phase of exploratory research which consisted of interviewing retailers, a sample size of 40 retailers from Sanquelim and Bicholim were taken. These retailers owned stores right from 200sq. ft to 1000sq. ft. Our third phase of research included a sample of 138 management students from Goa Institute of Management. These students were further segmented on the basis of AGE, GENDER, GEOGRAPHY (North India, Middle India, East India, West India [south India sample was too small and hence not considered]). The approach adopted (Phase 1) was exploratory for customers who are given a semi structured questionnaire on physical paper and retailers (Phase 2) with whom we had unstructured interviews. Descriptive approach (Phase 3) via Google docs was adopted for students where in a detailed structured questionnaire had been used for interviewing the consumers after the wet sampling/tasting of soupy noodles at the GIM canteen.Students were also allowed to fill the Google doc as per their convenien ce so as to avoid long queues while collecting data. The table below gives a quick view of the data collection methodology. Figure 7 Data Collection Process Chart 16 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN Questionnaire is being designed in two phases namely exploratory – customers (Phase 1) and descriptive- students (Phase 3). The questionnaire has been designed keeping in mind the research objective and the sample under study. Exploratory research of the customer, a semi structured questionnaire having three questions was prepared.The objective was to find out the awareness of Knorr Soupy Noodles. Our first question ‘Have you tasted Maggi Noodles’ was framed so as to select or target segment which in this exploratory research was assumed as ‘everyone who has tried Maggi Noodles is our target segment’. Discussion: People are asked three questions – Have you tasted Maggi noodles? (If YES then proceed to next, If NO then reject respondent) Have you heard about Knorr Soupy noodles? Have you tasted Knorr Soupy noodles? The purpose of the first question is to eliminate who do not form the part of our market i. e. ho do not consume Maggi noodles. Hence, people who have tasted Maggi noodles qualify for our target segment. The 2nd question aims at finding out the awareness level of Knorr Soupy noodles. And the next question becomes relevant as the next marketing strategy needs to cater those who have tasted Maggi. The combination of 2nd question and 3rd question will tell us the awareness translating into sales. During the2nd exploratory phase the retailers of various stores were asked question via conversation. The questions ranged from ‘What do you think about the brand Knorr soupy noodles? , ‘How is its supply? ’, ‘Do customers ask for Knorr Soupy noodles? ’, ‘Do you think it is better than Maggi noodles? ’ The Descriptive research questionnaire was a struc tured questionnaire having 35 questions. Questions were framed in order to extract their consumption behaviour and preferences of noodles so as to meet the objective of the research. For the Descriptive Research Questionnaire, the questionnaire was divided into three parts as follows: Part 1: Personal Information – To judge the impact of their background on their consumption behaviour.Part 2: Consumption Pattern – to study the knowledge of the brand and to unearth generic consumption patterns. 17 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Part 3: To analyse the tastes and preferences based on the wet sampling The reason for this division is to segregate the information gathering and understand the impact of each part on their consumption behaviour. We wanted to study each part as a separate determinant for the consumption of noodles. ANALYTICAL TOOLS Our survey has relied on qualitative data collected in the form of interviews and descriptive questionnaire.SPSS is not being used as the data collected is qualitative and the same could be illustrated effectively via MS office tools like Excel. The questionnaire includes Likert’s scale (1 being least preferred-5 being most preferred) and rank order scale technique for comparative analysis. We have used M. S. Excel for the ease of calculation. There are some over lapping questions and effect of double counting has been taken into account to arrive at a useful and practical conclusion. Pie charts and histograms are integral part of our study and of immense help in drawing inferences.The inferences have been drawn on the basis of gender, age, geographies, and preferences. The trend can be seen from the tables showing numbers and frequency of people. 18 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa FINDINGS EXPLORATORY (CUSTOMERS): Awareness of consumers towards Knorr Soupy Noodles Our research shows that the targeted people are well aware of the product. Their key target group (below 20yrs) and 20- 25yrs have a high awareness rate of 78%. Awareness in older groups drops. The consumption of noodles is more frequent among the teenagers and that qualifies as our target market.Age-wise distribution: The awareness in age group below 20 is 78% (High), in the age group 20-25 is 76%, in the age group 25-30 is 57%, and in the age group 30-35 is 66%. It must be noted that the majority of people surveyed belong to age group below 25, which has high level of awareness. The consumption of noodles is more frequent among the teenagers and that qualifies as our target market. Gender Distribution: Figure 8 illustrates that there is no significant difference in the awareness between Females and Males and hence the marketing effectively targets both the genders.Figure 8 Product Awareness distribution in Females and Males. Purchase conversion rate (The number of people who are aware about Knorr Soupy Noodles and have purchased it is the purchase conversion rate) From the study we can infer that t he purchase conversion rate for Knorr Soupy noodles is low and customers who are aware of the product are not convinced to try out the product. 19 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Age Wise Distribution: In the age group below 20 the purchase conversion rate is 38%, in the age group 20-25 it is 25%, in the age group25-30 it is 100% (High), in the age group 30-35 it is 50%.As mentioned above that the majority of the people belonged to below 25, where the purchase conversion is 33% (Moderate). The combined study of awareness and purchase conversion will be very useful in ascertaining the effectiveness of promotional activities and saleability of the product. EXPLORATORY FINDINGS (RETAILERS INTERVIEW): This is the part two of our phase 1 research, where in we interviewed 40 retailers about demand and distribution of soupy noodles. This part of research aims at exploring the functioning of the noodles market, competition, price elasticity of demand, and demand affected by avail ability of the product.As retailers are in a better position to tell us what a customer asks for and how he makes his buying decision. A few statements by some retailers are: â€Å"If the supply of Soupy noodles would have been fine, they would have taken over Maggi† †¦ Owner, Jai Bhavani Sweet Mart, Sanquelim â€Å"Incentives for displays are not given, and hence I don’t push the product to my customers† †¦ Anonymous retailer â€Å"Students see the ad on TV and ask for the product, but there is never proper supply and hence they take some other product† †¦ Owner, Om Prasad Bakery, BicholimDemand potential of Knorr Soupy noodles The interviews via random conversation with retailers threw light on the high demand for Knorr Soupy noodles during a particular phase when it was marketed via mass media. They also stated that the high demand was met with very poor supply which led to consumers shifting their repurchase decision to substitute brand s dude to unavailability. Demand is a function of price, income, price of substitute goods, choice and preference. Different determinants of demand play different role and no determinant can be studied in exclusivity. Demand potential of Soupy noodles is same as it is for Maggi.In the noodles market, Maggi has been a clear leader and best competitor to Maggi is Soupy noodles. There are factors which have an impact on people making choices between these two brands. Soupy noodles are priced higher than Maggi and some of the demand of soupy noodles might get affected by it being a price elastic market. Especially, when a heritage brand like Maggi is available at a lower price. Soupy noodles have an innovative concept of providing two food items at a time which is â€Å"noodles† and â€Å"soup†. The message is being transmitted strongly and customers are aware about it.However; the purchase conversion rate is not so impressive. The biggest reason might be the brand loyalty towards Maggi 20 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa and greater number of variants of Maggi. Soupy noodles have the potential of acquiring and influencing the brand loyalty but this is marred due to high recall, retention and re purchase intention of Maggi. Distribution of Knorr Soupy noodles HUL is known for its distribution and supply. However; in the case of Knorr soupy noodles, retailers have complaints about erratic distributors who do not supply sufficient stock of soupy noodles hence affect the availability.Like many other cases margins are not the issue of concern. Distributors refused to pay minimal amount for the prime facing location on the shelves and hence lose out on potential customer on account of lack of visibility even when it is available. DESCRIPTIVE FINDINGS (WET SAMPLING): 138 students from Goa Institute of Management were given tasting samples of Knorr Soupy Noodles (Chinese Chow) and were asked to respond within a questionnaire about their knowledge about and experience with the brand.There were 35 questions that had to be answered so as to acquire a deep understanding of the consumer’s perception about the brand. The findings are as below. FACTORS INFLUENCING THE CONSUMPTION OF INSTANT FOOD PRODUCTS The below chart shows a clear distribution of the various attributes that influence the consumption of instant food products. The attribute that influences the consumption the most is TASTE (42%) while PRICE (7%) and ADVERTISING (2%) are the factors that influence the purchase of instant noodles the least (assuming competitive pricing amongst competing brands).EASE OF MAKING (31%) and AVAILABILITY (18%) are factors that also significantly influence purchase decisions. Figure 9 Determinants of choice of noodles EATING PATTERNS OF STUDENTS PURCHASE FREQUENCY OF OUTSIDE FOOD (Non-canteen food) The study shows that students prefer eating outside and this could be due to the induced culture and socialising that lead students to c onsume non-canteen food. 21 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa The study shows 80 students (17% + 63%) out of every 100 eat food from outside at least 1-2 times a week.Maximum number of students (63%) eat outside 1-2 times a week while only 6% of the students eat out once in a month. The study throws light on the eating habits of students and concludes that majority of the students eat out at least once in 2 weeks. This segment is thus a very lucrative segment to target for instant food companies. PURCHASE FREQUENCY OF INSTANT NOODLES The study shows that instant noodles forms an important part of students menu especially due to shortage of time and erratic eating habits.Many consumers in colleges lead time-pressured schedules and have less time available for formal meals, as a result of which demand remains high for products which can be eaten at their convenience. The study shows that 48 students out of every 100 consume instant noodles at least 1-2 times a week i. e. that 61% out of the total number of students (80% from previous chart) eating outside (non-canteen food) consume instant noodles at least 1-2 times a week, while 22% of students of the total number of students eating outside consume instant noodles once in 2 weeks.Hence there is a great demand for instant noodles among students and instant food companies should effectively tap this. Gender-wise distribution: From the data we can prove that there is no significant difference (63% and 58%) in consumption habits of instant noodles amongst male and females. 22 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Figure 10 Gender Wise Consumption pattern of noodles Geographic distribution The study reveals that there is a significant difference between the consumption patterns of customers based on geographic segmentation.The study states that maximum numbers of consumers who eat noodles on an everyday basis (19%) are from West India (Mumbai, Goa, Rajasthan, and Gujarat). Students from North India and West India have the highest frequency of instant noodles consumption (cumulative 80%). Figure 11 Geographic consumption pattern of noodles across India 23 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa BRAND PREFERENCES AMONG INSTANT NOODLES The study reveals that the number one brand preference amongst instant noodles is Maggi Noodles. Knorr Soupy Noodles is at the second place with almost similar preference ratings as Sunfeast Yippee.A startling revelation was that Horlicks Foodles (2nd highest market share amongst instant noodles-AC Neilsen) ranks at the bottom. Figure 12 Rank wise Brand Preference of Instant Noodles TASTE SATISFACTION OF KNORR SOUPY NOODLES The study reveals that only 2 people out of every 100 hate soupy noodles. On wet sampling of Knorr Soupy noodles amongst students of GIM, the study revealed that majority of the sampled population(56%) found Knorr soupy noodles PRETTY TASTY while 33% of the population found the taste OK which could lead them to easily shift loya lty to other brands.A shocking revelation was that only 1% of the sampled population was blown away (SIMPLY MIND BLOWING) by the taste and hence this could directly correlate to low brand loyalty which could be the reason why the early adopters consuming the product are high, but followers are not increasing as expected by the company. Consumers are not enthralled yet not dissatisfied about the taste and this can be seen from the charts below. 1% of the consumers that would recommend the product to others would purchase more of Knorr soupy noodles if its taste were to improve, while they would also preferred increase in promotional activity and availability. On comparing taste preferences between Knorr Soupy noodles, Maggi Noodles and Maggi Atta noodles, Knorr Soupy noodles(30%) has similar preferences to Maggi Atta Noodles (31%) which is promoted as a health concept, while Maggi Noodles is the top preference(39%) in terms of Taste. 24 Study on Knorr Soupy Noodles Market in Goa Figu re 13 Recommend factor of Knorr Soupy NoodlesFigure 14 Taste Satisfaction of Soupy Noodles Figure 15 Rank of various noodle products on basis of taste REASONS FOR NOT PURCHASING KNORR SOUPY NOODLES The study reveals that bad taste (3%) had the least influence as to why customers were not purchasing Knorr soupy noodles.
